All you need to know about Sahasra Kalasabishekam seva
Sahasra Kalasabishekam seva is another unique and wonderful Seva offered to Lord Venkateswara. It is executed every Wednesday Morning commencing at 7AM. This special puja is experimented before the second bell is over in the morning, in other words after Sattumurai Bhoga Sreenivasa is brought outer the Bangaru Vakili. The idol is positioned facing east. The idol will have sambandha daaramu (Telugu word) i.e., a thin rope will be joined connecting it with the Mula vigraha in the sanctum. This rope will be knotted round the feet of Bhoga Srinivasa at this end and the other end will be located near the Kati Hasta of the Mula vigraha, thus symbolically involving the Mulabera with the pooja and making it obvious that Bhoga Srinivasa is only expressing the Mulavar.
Then the utsavavigrahas (Malayappa swami) is also brought and located outside the Bangaru Vakili facing south. It is as if the trio is heading over the special puja to be inaugurated. 1008 silver vessels filled with Abhisheka teertha are set aside along with 8 more parivara kalasa and one gold vessel filled with water. The devotees who have paid for the seva are settled in the mandapa around 1008 kalasa and sankalpa is done. Then the puja begins with the recitation of panchasuktas and pancha-santi-mantras. As these mantras are recited, the archakas perform Thirumanjana Abhisheka to the idols viz, Bhoga Srinivasa, Malayappa swami and his two partners and vishvak sena with water in the 1008 kalasa and further the eight pavithra kalasas. Finally the golden vessel with water will be taken by one archaka to the complement of recitation of Vedas and Mangal vadya in a pradakshina manner around the ananda vimana prakara (inner prakara), round the dhvajasthambha and then taken to main area (sanctum). Then at the Mulavarsannidhi ekantha – ashtothra – archana is presented to the leading deity.
This archana is not open to general public but is done at the back of curtain drawn at the sanctum. The archaka showers (proksana) the water from the golden vessel (Swarna kalasa) on the feet of the deity then symbolically including the Mulavigraha also in the Sahasra kalasa for Abhisheka puja. The vigraha near the Bangaru Vakili will be brought back to the sanctum. The second bell rings. Then in the presence of temple officers, Akshataropana ritual will get place in the sanctum i.e., Akshata (holy yellow rice) will be offered at the feet of the prime deity. Then the archaka sprinkles some of those grains on his head and then the rest is kept for offering to the temple executives and devotees who participaate in the seva. By that time, the curtains will be pinched and the arjitha sponsors have a Darshan of the Mulavar. They will be given vastrabahumana, sathari and teertha. One ticket for the Sahasra kalasa Abhisheka permits only 6 people to participate with only one couple allowed for Sankalpa.
“Prasadam” – 7 Big Laddus, 1/4Kilo each of Sweet Pongal, Pulihora and 7 dosas and 7 vadas are being served to all devotees taking part in this puja. Sahasra Deepalankara (1000 Candle decoration) seva is the single daily seva that is done outside the temple. Sri Malayappa swami along with Sridevi and Bhudevi are brought out in procession where one thousand wick lamps are enlightened. The ticket holders are given vastra bahumanam and 5 small laddu’s as prasadam for this seva. At the conclusion of the seva, the ticket holders are also sent for the Darshan of the main deity in the sanctum sanctorum. The total duration of the Sahasra Kalasabishekam seva is 30 minutes.
